Fact Check: Romania Is NOT Biggest Gas Producer In Europe Fact Check: Romania Is NOT Biggest Gas Producer In Europe Others Bigger

Is Romania the biggest gas producer in Europe? No, that's not true: Although Romania is among the biggest European gas-producing countries, statistics show that other states like Norway, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands are the continent's top gas producers.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here), on TikTok by @bobbydtiktok (archived here) on February 19, 2024, under the title (translated from Romanian to English by Lead Stories staff) "What else are we leaving to our nephews?!"

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

The man speaking in the video asks his followers to answer a question: Who is the biggest gas producer in Europe? He then says (as translated):

You will say: 'Well, I don't know, Germany, Spain, France, I don't know.' Let me tell you: Romania. Who profits? Austria. You didn't know this one.

Then he discusses the privatization of Petrom (in 2004, Romanian gas company Petrom was privatized, with Austrian OMV AG being the new majority shareholder) and politicians "selling" the country's natural resources (archived here).

However, several statistics disprove the claim, although Romania is positioned among the top countries.

Russia, which also stretches over Europe, is the world's second-largest producer of natural gas, behind the United States, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), and has the world's largest gas reserves. But most of Russia's gas reserves are in the remote Asian part of the country, according to Britannica, in West Siberia.

Norway had the highest natural gas production in Europe in 2021, according to the IEA, followed by the U.K., the Netherlands and Ukraine, which is followed by Romania. The largest natural gas field in Europe is in Groningen, in the Netherlands, according to Britannica, followed by the Troll field, under the North Sea, less than 60 miles off the coast of Norway.

The most recent Eurostat report on the EU member states' natural gas supply (archived here), based on data from April 2023, also shows the Netherlands was the highest producer of natural gas in the Union, with a natural gas production of 611,131 terajoules in 2022. Romania was second (351,683 terajoules), followed by Germany (160,692 terajoules).

There are prospects for Romania to become the biggest gas producer in the EU through Neptun Deep, a natural gas project that will be developed in the Romanian Black Sea by OMV Petrom and Romgaz (archived here). It's expected to provide a total volume of 100 billion cubic meters of gas, as recently reported by several Romanian press outlets quoting the president of OMV Petrom (archived here and here). But gas extraction through Neptun Deep is not set to start until 2027.

Lead Stories has previously debunked a similar claim on Romania being the EU's richest country in natural resources.
