Fact Check: Government Did NOT Impose a Ban on Selling Romanian Pigs or Their Meat No Ban on Pigs

Did the Romanian government impose a "devastating" ban on the sale of pigs and their meat, in the context of 80% of pork sold in the country already being imported? No, that's not true: the video doesn't explain that this is just a draft decision by the Romanian Veterinarian Authority, prompted by the effects of the African Swine fever on livestock in the last six years.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here) published on TikTok by user @dmx990, on August 12, 2023, under the title "No to Romanian pork" (All translations by Lead Stories). It opened:

No sale of the animals or their meat will be permitted following a recent decision by the government led by Ciolacu. This move comes as Romania is already importing 80% of the pork sold in shops nationwide.

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

The claim is misleading for several reasons: first, the "new law" mentioned in the video is a draft decision by the Romanian Veterinary-Sanitary Authority. The draft was submitted for public debate on July 27, 2023. The authority received suggestions and amendments for 10 days, and is now analyzing them, according to its website. The draft has not yet been implemented.

Second, the draft does not ban the sale of Romanian pigs or pork altogether - it aims to ban "non-commercial, subsistence households" (namely, family farms without a license to sell, as defined by Law 122/ May 2023) from doing so, because they cannot be regularly monitored for biosecurity compliance. And while Romania does import 80% of its pork, this is not because authorities want to put farmers out of business, but because the country has been affected by the African swine fever since 2017. The epidemic is still affecting eight out of 41 counties in Romania.
