Fact Check: New Education Law Does NOT Institute "LGBT Education" or "Gender Education" No Mandate

Does the new Romanian Education Law for schools and high schools institute EU-mandated classes known as "LGBT education" or "Gender education"? No, that's not true: it merely mentions that teachers have an obligation to promote diversity and discourage discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The story originated from a video (archived here) by the Romanian senator Diana Șoșoacă, published on TikTok by the user @ichimstefanel_vasilica05 with the title "EMERGENCY LIVE!". The video, translated from the Romanian language by Lead Stories, opened:

Madam Senator Diana Șoșoacă, in an emergency live!

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

The initial version of the recent Education Law, PL-x nr. 253/2023, stated that teachers were required to promote diversity as a valuable learning tool and explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, the final draft of the law underwent modifications.

However, the initial draft referenced in the video did not include any mention of "LGBT education," "gender education," or gender ideology. The draft emphasized that promoting diversity as a learning resource in schools extended beyond just gender, encompassing a broader scope.

After receiving backlash from religious sects, the law underwent modifications in Parliament. The final adopted version no longer mandates "promoting diversity" but rather emphasizes "respecting diversity." Additionally, the phrase "sexual orientation" was removed, and the article addressing the prohibition of discrimination was reworded more broadly. While technically still encompassing sexual orientation, the revised phrasing avoids explicitly mentioning the term.
